Well, since the election is over, I am going to post elsewhere. With the election of the most liberal president in the history of the United States and an almost filibuster proof Senate, I figure there needs to be a new emphasis. So visit my new semi-political blog, Principled Conservative Opposition.

You can also find a more theological and worldview centered posts at my blog, Here I Stand . . . I Can Do Nothing Else.

I may continue here when the political environment heats up in 2009 for the 2010 mid-term elections.

The presidential election of 2008 is now history and the Democratic party is once again in the White House. But they not only will control the White House but also the House of Representatives and the Senate. And the Senate, when you factor in liberal Independents and Republicans will pretty much be filibuster-proof. That is the liberal/socialist (yes, in spite of what the media tells you it is socialist) agenda will now be free to catapult into full control.

I have found it interesting that many have been declaring the death of conservatism with the defeat of John McCain. Nothing could be further from the truth. The truth is, there was not conservative at the helm of the Republican party ticket this year. John McCain has proudly declared that he “reached across the aisle” to work with Democrats in the Senate. Translate that to mean that he compromised on key points in order to appease the left. It’s funny that no Democrat talks about reaching across the aisle . . . the Democrats only talk about how good it is when a Republican does this.
Interesting . . . Demand that Republicans STOP acting like and voting like Democrats.

Over the past few months there has been much talk as to how President-elect Obama will lead us down the road to Socialism. I must confess that is a concern of mine. But sadly, the Republican party, and yes, even President Bush, has hastened the journey down that road with socialist policies that have resulted in the “bailout” of private businesses, including banks. It is interesting that from the 10 Principles that Marx presented in his Communist Manifesto, #5 was “Centralization of credit in the banks of the state, by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly.” With the bailout, which is proving to be no help to the crisis in the economy, the U.S. government now owns a share of the major banks. And the banks have been using the bailout money to buy up smaller banks, thus hastening the centralization.

We are in precarious waters in our republic. We must hold our elected officials “feet to the fire” in the years to come. We cannot let them just squander the heritage and future of this nation for their own personal selfishness. Know your representative and senators. Have their phone numbers and email addresses close at hand. Write, call, become a nuisance if you have to, but demand that they follow the principles of the United States Constitution not any other document or idea that man dreams up as a “cure all” for our nation.

Albert Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, posted on his blog a very solid and insightful article entitled A Prayer for America on Election Day. Click on the link to read the entire post on his blog. Here are his main points:

1. We should pray that God will bless America with leaders better than we deserve.

2. We should pray that Americans will be motivated to fulfill the responsibilities of citizenship, yet also that we will be stripped of an unhealthy and idolatrous confidence in the power of government to save us.

3. We must pray that Americans will vote by conscience, not merely on the basis of celebrity or emotion.

4. We must pray that Americans will vote to defend the least among us — and especially those who have no vote.

5. We should pray that God will prick the conscience of the nation on issues of morality, righteousness, and respect for marriage as the central institution of human civilization.

6. We should pray that God will protect these candidates and their families.

7. We should pray that the election is conducted with honor, civility, respect and justice.

8. We must pray that Americans will be prepared to accept the results of the election with respect and kindness.

9. We should pray that this election would lead to even greater opportunities to preach the Gospel, and that the freedom of the church will be respected, honored, and protected.

10. We must pray for the church, praying that the church of the Lord Jesus Christ would be strengthened in the truth, grounded in the faith, and empowered for witness and ministry.

He closes with this: “May God bless American, not because this nation deserves to be blessed, but because He is a God of grace and mercy. Oh God . . . save us from ourselves.”

This is just a skeleton . . . read the entire article at AlbertMohler.com

John Piper also has a post of a prayer for Election Day . . . read it HERE.

Investor’s Business Daily published a summary of the issues and how each candidate stands on that issue. I encourage you to go and read it online and click on the various links. Online: What Voters Should Know BEFORE They Vote.

While you’re at it, reading frantically about the election, my personal favorite commentator, Thomas Sowell, wrote two penetrating articles yesterday: Obama, Powell & Popularity AND Ego and Mouth.

Quick Facts: Financial Crisis

Democrats created the mortgage crisis by forcing banks to give loans to people who couldn’t afford them.

In 2006, McCain sponsored a bill to fix the problems with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Barney Frank and other Democrats successfully opposed it.

Obama was one of the highest recipients of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac donations in Congress.

Quick Facts: Taxes

Under Obama’s tax plan, the percentage of tax filers who pay zero federal income tax would rise from 33% to 44%, leaving the bill to the remaining 56%. Already, 5% of earners pay 60% of all taxes.

Obama proposes a 33% increase in the capital gains tax as a matter of “fairness”, despite historical evidence that raising this tax decreases revenue. McCain has proposed cutting the capital gains tax in half to spur growth.

Obama wants to increase corporate taxes by 25%, although U.S. businesses already pay the second-highest marginal tax rates in the industrialized world.

Quick Facts: Iraq

When the U.S. was on the verge of losing in Iraq, McCain chose to stand and fight. Obama chose retreat.

Even after the surge succeeded, Obama told ABC’s Terry Moran he would still oppose it if he had the chance to do it all over again.

Quick Facts: Defense

Obama has promised to significantly cut defense spending, including saying “I will slow our development of future combat systems.”

John McCain has vowed: “We must continue to deploy a safe and reliable nuclear deterrent, robust missile defenses and superior conventional forces that are capable of defending the United States and our allies.”

Quick Facts: Background & Character

Obama voted “present” 135 times as a state senator, and according to David Ignatius of the Washington Post, “gained a reputation for skipping tough votes.”

McCain has taken stances unpopular with his own party and/or the public on controversial issues, including immigration, campaign finance reform, judicial nominations, the Iraq War and more.

Quick Facts: Judges & Courts

In a 2001 interview, Obama said he regretted that the Supreme Court “didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution.”

In the same interview, Obama criticized the Supreme Court because it “never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth and sort of more basic issues of political and economic justice in this society.”

Obama has focused on empathy, rather than legal reasoning and restraint, as his basis for appointing judges, saying, “We need somebody who’s got the heart, the empathy…to understand what it’s like to be poor, or African-American, or gay, or disabled, or old.”

McCain opposes judicial activism, saying, “my nominees will understand that there are clear limits to the scope of judicial power.”

Quick Facts: Energy

McCain has proposed building 45 new nuclear plants by 2030 and is in favor of drilling in sectors of the Outer Continental Shelf.

Obama has refused to take a stand, saying only “we should explore nuclear power as part of the energy mix” and he will “look at” drilling offshore.

The Choice
By the Editors

National Review

This election does not present Americans with a straight-up choice between conservatism and liberalism. This is not so much because John McCain is a moderate, although he is, as because liberals are likely to have effective majorities in both houses of Congress. Thus the choice we face is, in most respects, between a liberalism that is checked and one that is not.

We have reached this point because of the unpopularity of President Bush, the parlous state of the economy, and the enduring weakness of Republican positions on domestic policy. Senator McCain has done little to overcome these obstacles to his presidential hopes, and as a result he trails in the polls.

His opponent, Barack Obama, is a talented young politician who has shown both discipline and savvy in beating Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination. Given the initial odds against him, it is not quite right to say that he is untested. Yet his accomplishments, beyond propelling himself to the top of American politics, are few.

His views place him on the left edge of liberalism. The press has ruled that discussion of his extensive association with radicals is outside the bounds of polite society, although his history surely demonstrates at the very least that he has followed a policy of having no enemies to the left — and indicates that he probably shared more of their views than he now lets on.

The platform on which Obama is running is troubling enough. He advocates higher tax rates than any Democratic presidential candidate of the past 20 years has called for. He favors a health-care plan that would move millions of Americans from the private plans they prefer to a government system — and, in the long run, would reduce the quality and raise the cost of health care. He is more hostile to trade liberalization than any presidential nominee of either party within the last 70 years. He supports taxpayer funding of abortion. He seeks judges who “empathize” with liberal causes rather than feel themselves bound by the text of the Constitution. And with a stronger liberal base in Congress than any Democratic president has had in at least 40 years, he would have a good chance to get much of this domestic agenda accomplished.

His chief foreign-policy commitments have been to meet with America’s enemies — one could be forgiven for wondering whether he even thinks in terms of America’s having enemies — and to abandon Iraq. If he had prevailed on Iraq over the last three years, we would have lost a war that we now appear to be winning.

Luckily for the United States and Iraq, Senator McCain prevailed instead. He advocated the troop increase and strategic shift now known as the surge, first when other Republicans were denying the need for any change and then when they were rushing to quit the war. When President Bush came around on the need for the surge, McCain overlooked their past differences and became the policy’s most effective advocate. If we win in Iraq, McCain will deserve a good deal of the credit.

McCain has a solid record of opposing economically damaging tax increases. He has always opposed abortion. He has advanced a creative free-market health-care policy, even if he has not done much to defend it against Obama’s dishonest attacks. He is a scourge of wasteful spending and a resolute free trader. He says that he will look for judges who have demonstrated their fidelity to the Constitution as written. We have our differences with McCain, as do most conservatives, on such issues as immigration and stem cells. On each of these issues, however, Obama is at least as mistaken.

We have no doubt that if McCain is president we will find much to criticize. But we will be confident that we have the right commander-in-chief and that liberals do not have a free hand to remake our country. In this election we support Senator McCain and urge all conservatives to do so as well.
